Are you not familiar with the concept of the septic tank? Wondering how does it work and if it is worth the investment? Well, if you have never heard about septic, then it is a concept that is alien. However, individuals who are utilizing septic tanks on a daily basis know the importance of having one. Wondering what it is and how does a septic system work? Well, if you are curious about it, then let’s get a glimpse of what a septic tank is and how it works here:

Septic Tank- What is it?

Wondering what is septic tank? Well, it is an economical underwater sedimentation tank that is quite useful in terms of treating wastewater with the help of processes such as drainage and biological decomposition. It is quite useful for residential and commercial properties that are not connected to the main system. The tank separates the floating matter, such as grease, oils, and solids, from the wastewater while digesting the organic matter.

It has a simple design with an underground water container made of materials such as concrete, plastic, or glass. Septic tanks are installed at least 50 m away, underground from the household, and consist of two chambers or compartments along with a tank that receives water from the inlet pipe. There are numerous types of septic tanks used by homeowners and business owners across the globe, including:

  • Conventional or Soil-based Systems
  • Drip Distribution Systems
  • Chamber Systems
  • Aerobic Treatment Units
  • Recirculating Sand Filter Systems
  • Evapotranspiration
  • Mound Systems, and so on.

How Does A Septic System Work?

Now that you know what is septic tank, its types, and how useful it is, let’s know how it works here:

  • Waste from the bathroom, kitchen, washroom, and other areas of the household is collected with the help of a drainage pipe that connects to this septic tank.
  • A septic tank usually is connected by two pipes known as the inlet and outlet pipes. The inlet pipe collects the wastewater from the house, and the water is kept for a long time so that the solid and liquid waste is separated from each other. The outlet pipe of the tank moves the pre-processed wastewater from the septic tank and then evenly spreads it in the soil or course water.
  • The compartments of the septic tank, along with the T-shaped outlets, help in preventing the scum and sludge from escaping the tank and then traveling to the drain field area.
  • The collected wastewater is then separated into three layers. The top layer is efficient in collecting the oil present in the pipe that floats above the waste. The middle layer collects the waste particles along with the wastewater. The third layer is constructed to collect the solid particles from the waste.
  • After the whole process is complete, the wastewater present in the tank exits into the drain field, which is discharged into the poor surfaces through pipes, allowing the wastewater to filter through the soil.
  • The wastewater is accepted, treated, and dispersed with the help of soil, which ultimately is discharged into the groundwater. It is then soaked into the soil, which filters out naturally the harmful viruses, bacteria, and nutrients present in the wastewater.

Over time, the septic tank may become inefficient if its maintenance is neglected. So, it is best to perform a regular septic system care and inspection or get it done by a professional so that you can increase the overall productivity and lifespan of your tank.
